AT&T Posts Solid Q2 Says Its Selling New iPhones Twice As Fast As Old iPhones

A solid Q2 from AT&T T despite concerns that a weaker U.S. economy would pinch the telco. AT&T posted $30.9 billion in revenue up 4.7% year-over-year and slightly short of Wall Streets $31.2 billion estimate. EPS came in at $0.76 in line with analysts expectations. No color about the economy or Q3 in AT&Ts release so well wait until the conference call starts at 10 a.m. ET for that well update during and after the call with any highlights.AT&Ts wireless unit continued to lead growth. The company posted $10.9 billion of wireless revenue during the quarter up $1.4 billion or 14.5% from Q2 2007. Revenue from wireless data services like text messaging and email grew 52% year-over-year to $2.5 billion. Specifically wireless internet access revenue more than doubled year-over-year thanks in part to massively increased sales of smartphones which often require subscribers to buy an Internet access plan $30month. AT&T says 18% of its subscribers now use smartphones up from 8% a year ago.Customer growth ticked down AT&T added 1.3 million net new wireless subscribers during the quarter down 123000 from a year ago and short of the 1.5 million that archrival Verizon Wireless says it added last quarter. No big deal AT&T should have a monster Q3 thanks to Apples AAPL new iPhone 3G which launched exclusively on AT&T on July 11. AT&T says sales of the new iPhone 3G after 12 days and despite short supply are nearly double the levels at which AT&T sold the first iPhone last summer. No surprise -- its $400 cheaper -- but still a good trend. Tradeoff The company has already warned that subsidizing the new iPhones several hundreds of dollars apiece would ding its earnings by 10 to 12 cents per share this year and next and that the phone wont be accretive until 2010.AT&T signed up 170000 subscribers to its fledgling U-Verse cable TV service during Q2 bringing total subscribers to 549000. The company says its on track for more than a million subscribers by the end of the year.
Content management company Qumu has secured a $10.7 million third round funding as it seeks to speed development of CDN products and build up its marketing team. The round was led by ATV and joined by SAP Ventures a division of SAP AG Storm Ventures Garage Technology Ventures Halo Opportunity Fund and the Angels Forum. A little over two years ago the Emeryville CA.-based company raised a $5.3 million second round from The Angels Forum The Halo Fund and Garage Technology Ventures all of whom contributed to Qumus $1.3 million first round of funding in 2003. As we mentioned in June Qumu is one of a handful of companies that is working with AT&T NYSE T on its new CDN business.
RIM Getting Beat Up Unfairly Enough Room For BlackBerry And iPhone Says RBC RIMM AAPL

Research In Motion RIMM shares have tumbled some 20% since the BlackBerry maker posted sub-par Q1 results and Q2 guidance late last month. The markets main concerns General economic crappiness and competition from the likes of Apples AAPL new iPhone 3G which could get in the way of RIMs meteoric growth.RBCs Mike Abramsky thinks the iPhone fear is overblown and that theres enough room for both RIM and Apple in the fast-growing smartphone market which he sees growing from around 100 million users now to 400 million in 2010. Specifically he thinks RIM will take share from companies like Nokia NOK Motorola MOT Samsung Microsoft MSFT HTC etc.Driving growth New gadgets like the forthcoming 3G Bold and touchscreen Thunder and international expansion. A few key points from Abramskys latest reportRIM has much better distribution The iPhone is only available from AT&T T in the U.S. plus one exclusive carrier in the U.K. Germany and France. More than 15 carriers sell BlackBerries in the U.S. all major carriers in U.K. Germany and France etc.RIM will get a bunch of bonus promotion Non iPhone carriers like Verizon in the U.S. are expected to aggressively promote BlackBerry as the only viable competitor to the iPhone.Unlike the iPhone which is tightly controlled by Apple RIM lets carriers upsell ringtones video music apps games etc. so carriers are likely to embrace and promote BlackBerries.Only 5% of iPhone first generation buyers were former BlackBerry users while 32% upgraded from Motorola 16% from Samsung 13% from Nokia etc.Fair enough. We agree that there are several reasons someone might buy a BlackBerry over an iPhone -- different shapessizes prices service packages carriers etc. -- and that RIM is better positioned in the smartphone market than say Motorola. But we caution against assuming that Apple wont be stealing would-be RIM buyers or existing BlackBerry customers. For instance the fact that only 5% of first-gen iPhone buyers were former BlackBerry users is no longer a valid point of defense. All iPhones and iPod touches -- not just new ones -- can now access corporate email calendaring security etc. -- they couldnt before -- and Apples enterprise presence can only go up. Meanwhile RIM is increasingly focused on the consumer market where Apple will be its biggest competitor. Non-enterprise customers accounted for 40% of RIMs customer base during Q1 and 60% of its growth.See AlsoRIM Slapped Consumer Growth Under Siege Because Of Apple iPhoneRIMs iPhone-Killer BlackBerry Thunder Nowhere Near Ready Trouble For Verizon?Apples iPhone Enterprise Opportunity Larger Than Thought Goldman SaysRIMs Rapid Growth Plan A $49 BlackBerry Flip Phone?

Are iPhone VoIP Apps A Threat To Wireless Carriers? No

Should AT&T be worried about new apps for Apples iPhone that use the Internet to connect cheap or free phone calls? No -- not yet at least. Why not? Well so far theres only one app -- Truphone currently ranked tenth in the travel category in Apples iPhone App Store. Initial reviews suggest its flaky and Truphone expects you to pay 6 cents per minute to call other cellphones in the U.S. and Canada -- hardly a free lunch. But we expect other companies -- eBays EBAY Skype unit for example -- to eventually create more compelling iPhone apps for Internet phone calls which could include free calling. Or maybe Vonage VG will create an iPhone app that can access their Internet phone service and uses your Vonage home phone number. But even then we think theres a minimal threat to AT&T.Why? First because Apple AAPL has absolute control over the apps that go into its store and its said it will only approve VoIP apps that use the iPhones wi-fi connection to connect calls -- not AT&Ts 3G data network. This is hardly convenient -- youll need to find a wi-fi hotspot then youll have to sit there while you make your call. Not going to work if youre driving for example.Second there are big missing features. You cant receive calls with the same phone number that your cellphone uses. And youd need a separate voicemail account. And youd still be using the same battery power as if you were making normal calls -- maybe even more -- so its not like you can sit around talking for hours for free.Perhaps more important AT&T already has you locked in to a monthly calling plan that includes in theory all the domestic calling minutes you were planning to use each month. The worst that could happen You bump your calling plan down to a cheaper one. Youre still on a 2-year contract and youre still paying more for service than the average AT&T subscriber. The only compelling use case right now is International calls which make up a small minority of the calls people make from their cellphones. This could be a bigger deal in countries where the iPhone is sold without a contract and operates on pre-paid calling plans -- but carriers are already factoring that in to the phones purchase price. AT&T for example will charge a $400 premium when it starts selling no-contract iPhones later this year. What will be interesting? To see how Google and its carrier partners -- T-Mobile DT and Sprint Nextel S in the U.S. -- police VoIP apps for the forthcoming Android platform which in theory will be more open than Apples iPhone platform. In theory itll be possible to write a VoIP app for an Android phone that runs on a 3G data network and can operate from anywhere -- wi-fi hotspot or not. Thats where the phone companies could potentially feel a pinch.See AlsoWhat Google Can Learn From The iPhone Apps Launch More Games For AndroidiPhone App Advertising Barely There But InterestingiPhone Developers Lament Apple Wont Let Us Fix Bugs

NBC Opens Up Multi-Platform Olympics Coverage To Verizon And AT&T

Verizon NYSE VZ and AT&T NYSE T are both going multiplatform for the Olympics Games in Beijing next month. NBC Universal NYSE GE which has exclusive rights to the games in the U.S. has given each of the carriers the go ahead to offer NBCs Olympics coverage on mobile IPTV and broadband. NBC Universal has typically been extremely protective of its Olympics coverage and has rarely given carriage deals to others if it might mean losing eyeballs during the process. Verizon will air NBCs coverage of the Olympics on its FiOS TV service through video-on-demand programming and live streaming footage of the competition. Release. The carriers also launching two NBC high-definition channels to carry NBCs basketball and soccer coverage at the games and will be running daily highlights breaking news and results on its streaming wireless video service.AT&T which is also a sponsor of the Olympics and official telecommunications provider for the U.S. team will go multiplatform with similar programming from NBC.
Opera Software has opened up beta testing to the public for its new Opera Mobile 9.5 browser. What is it? A better Web browser for smartphones that run Nokias NOK Symbian operating system and Microsofts MSFT Windows Mobile. What does it do?
iPhone 3G Mostly Sold Out In Five Days AAPL

Want a new iPhone? Youd better be patient - or live on one of the coasts. Apple has run out of the new machines at 117 of its 188 stores. FortuneAs of 600 a.m. EDT Tuesday all three models 8GB black 16 GB black or white of the hot-selling device were sold out in 21 states according to Jim Neal a retired PR man living near Kansas City who took the time to check each of Apples 188 U.S. retail stores using the companys iPhone availability widgets. All told he writes 117 Apple stores reported having sold out of all models and only 27 stores indicated they had all three models in stock. The states reporting no stock on hand were Connecticut Delaware Hawaii Indiana Iowa Kentucky Louisiana Maryland Michigan Minnesota Missouri Nebraska New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico Oregon Rhode Island Tennessee Utah Washington Wisconsin.Apple AAPL advises shoppers to check availability after 900 p.m. the night before they visit an Apple retail store - and if necessary get up at the crack of dawn.Next question If you can get your hands on a new phone whos the activation process? We havent heard the same kind of panic and hysteria we were seeing on Friday which leads us to believe that Apple and AT&T have figured out how to solve the problem. Meanwhile somebody thinks the mini fiasco is good for Synchronoss Technolgies SNCR the company that used to help Apple with iPhone activation but doesnt anymore. Shares spiked on Friday and are up nearly 20% in the last week.See Also Snubbed iPhone 1.0 Partner Dont Blame Us!

New Sprint Treo Good News For Palms Margins But Whos Gonna Buy It?

Palms long-suffering profit margins could finally get a bump The smartphone maker just released its new Treo 800w which will be sold via Sprint Nextel S. This is one of the Microsoft MSFT Windows Mobile-based phones that Palm has been teasing for months. Its hoping the Windows machines will boost revenue and margins while the company preps top-secret next-gen phones for next year. The problem We see Sprint and Palm having a hard time collecting $249 after $100 mail-in rebate for the new Treo next to a sea of cheaper competitors. We think many Sprint smartphone buyers will opt for the $130 Samsung Instinct the $99 margin-killing Palm Centro or the $150 RIM RIMM BlackBerry Curve. And lets not forget Apples AAPL iPhone which is more advanced than the Treo multi-touch display better Web browser same Microsoft Exchange corporate email capabilities and cheaper $199 at AT&T.The remaining audience Sprint Windows Mobile enthusiasts who dont like Sprints HTC Mogul.
Give Piper Jaffray Apple AAPL analyst Gene Munster a mulligan This morning Munster had the bad luck of issuing his first-weekend iPhone sales estimate 425000 units just a few hours before Apple released its actual sales milestone 1 million units. Munster just sent out a second note explaining the discrepancy Strong overseas sales and better-than-expected U.S. sales thanks to improvements Apple made activating iPhones to AT&Ts T network. Specifically it looks as if Gene got his estimates by surveying shoppers in New York and Minneapolis and may have overestimated how bad the activation problems were probably because New Yorkers complain so often and so loudly. So is Munster jacking up his estimates for the rest of the September quarter? Nope. Dont overthink it he says. While demand is strong he thinks iPhone production will be constrained this quarter limiting Apple from sky-high sales numbers.Meanwhile Apple is trading up 2% to $176.09.Earlier What Activation Problems?
Week In Review iPhonemania Turns Ugly Jerry Yang Gets Feisty

All eyes were on Apple AAPL this week which released the cheaper-with-a-more-expensive-contract iPhone 3G on Friday. Apple may be shipping up to one million phones to 22 countries but all of the AT&T T stores around Silicon Alley are sold out. But even many people who got their precious handsets werent happy Activation snafus plagued many buyers. The upside At least New Yorkers are among the privileged few who can take advantage of the new technology -- in large swathes of the United States theres no 3G coverage. iPhone owners old and new will be able to download and purchase some 500 iPhone apps but Apple will probably veto many of the apps we most want.Yahoos YHOO Jerry I bleed purple Yang continues to say that Microsoft MSFT never made a serious bid for Yahoo and hes not quitting. Rumors that Yahoos Q2 earnings may disappoint certainly wont help Yang quell the shareholder revolt. But given the slumping performance of both YHOO and MSFT Yahoo investors are unlikely to see anything above $30 if a deal ever gets worked out. And thats a big if. Yangs leadership aside we still have no faith Icahn can do anything to increase shareholder value beyond what the current team is doing. We dont believe in magic bullets. Whats your plan Carl? The times are trying even for Google GOOG who is hiring fewer people these days. The search giant has been having trouble making money off YouTube.
iPhone Round-Up The Wait Continues MobileMe Hits Snags Activation Problems Persist

Heres a round-up of our iPhone coverage at mocoNews. Stay tuned for more news as the device begins to sell out activation issues persist MobileMe continues to be unpredictable and even old 2G iPhone users are impacted. The Wait Continues Everyone thought that the wait for the iPhone 3G was finally over today when it went up for sale in 21 countries around the world but instead the people who absolutely insisted on buying one today are finding themselves standing in line and having to wait a bit longer. Our own Matt Kapko cruised round the Long Beach Calif. area today trying to pick up one of the hot new iPhone 3G phones. He visited about five AT&T NYSE T stores which were all sold out and then headed to an Apple NSDQ AAPL store where the hundreds-deep line led him to head home and try again later. More here. MobileMe Also Crashes MobileMe which allows people to sync their contacts calendar email and other data between their iPhone and computers is also experiencing activation problems today. The service which they explain as exchange for the rest of us has great potentialand ultimately could even prove more valuable to Apple than the App storebut a poor start today could leave a sour taste in iPhone owners mouths. AP reported late yesterday that some users were denied access to their accounts which cost $99 a year. Om Malik at GigaOm also reported problems. Glenn Fleishman at Wifinetnews.com is posting on Twitter that MobileMe screwed up syncing his contacts and now he has duplicates. The usual Apple crap he writes. More here Activation problems persist As posted earlier on PaidContent and mocoNews theres a long list of activation problems that started as early as the launch in London and then spread counterclockwise around the globe with many people still unsatisfied with brokenor so-called brickediPhones. The new update is that not only are iPhone 3G users disappointed but theres still a pretty good old iPhones may be experiencing problems too if they tried tried to update to the 2.0 software this morning reports VentureBeat.
iPhone Launch Grips Boston

One of our kind Boston-based hedge-fund contributors files this reportI did a little lunchtime research to see how the iphone release is going and here are my findingsAT&T store Long line of about 30 people at the AT&T store on Boylston security guard outside line appeared to be moving a bit slowly and people in line were anxiously asking store folks if they were sold out of any of the memory sizecolors yet. Clerk said no but he seemed a little panicked and unconvinced this state would last. Looked as if there were about 10 people in process inside.Verizon store No one outside no one inside. Not too surprising but sort of my control group.Flagship Apple store on Boylston Snaking lines of people in two clumps going around the block maybe 50-60+ people outside? Lots of people inside. Security guards employees buzzing about. People sitting on the curb with signs that say We will buy your used iPhones from you. I looked on eBay when I returned and my old iPhone is going for roughly $350 because it is unlockable.I saw a guy carrying the new phone and I asked him a few questions1. Where he got it South Boston ATT store2. How long in line one hour this morning3. How long to activate when inside less than 10-15 minutes they said hed receive his first bill in three weeks.4. Was he happy with the process yes quite. They just stuck the thing in a dock tapped some stuff out and he was done. Only issue now is that he couldnt figure out how to download apps from the Apps Store. It asks for an account and he doesnt know what his acct or password are.5. Was he an ATT customer before No actually didnt even have a cell phone or an email address before. If there were no cost to me in terms of time to wait in line buying a brand new iPhone would be close to a breakeven proposition for me.$199 cost plus 1 year of higher monthly data fees of $10month $320 and I can sell my old phone for $350+ minus shipping and listingclosing fees on eBay.One thing though is that perhaps Id have to extend my contract an additional 12 mos which makes this a -$120 deal for a brand new phone. I have a feeling I am allowed to upgrade wo an extension but I am not totally sure.

The phone may be quicker but the wait sure is a drag. After New Zealand and Japan got there first after Europeans queued up one year after iPhone 1.0 hit??? North Americans have finally got their hands on the 3G version of the device that perhaps Apple NSDQ AAPL should have released in the first place. But many who have walked away from Apple and AT&T NYSE T stores with the new handset have found themselves unable to activate it on the network. Even those trying to activate inside the Apple Store werent spared what appears to be yet another system overload. In the UK O2s web-based activation system which also was strained required Microsoft NSDQ MSFT Internet Explorer of all things.
Apples iPhone 3G is now on sale and demand is high -- even at our tiny local AT&T store more than 70 people had lined up before sales kicked off at 8 a.m.So how many iPhones will Apple AAPL and AT&T T sell this weekend? Unlike last years iPhone 1.0 launch when most analysts aimed embarrassingly high we havent seen many estimates. But RBC analyst Mike Abramsky takes a stab today He predicts Apple will ship 1+ million iPhones this weekend? The logic is pretty straightforward There is pent up demand the phones are $400 cheaper at least in the U.S. and instead of a single carrier and single country Apple is now selling the iPhone via 28 carriers in 22 countries. The real question Can Apple keep up with demand? Abramsky estimates that Apples initial iPhone 3G production is around 1.5 million units possibly insufficient for global channel fill.
