New Adobe Player Adds Sony Movies Still Trying Harder

Adobe NSDQ ADBE in a somewhat foolhardy quest to develop and establish its own media distribution creds has now updated its Media Player with a new interface and added full length movies from Sony NYSE SNE Pictures...also added are new shows from CBS NYSE CBS including episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 48 Hours The Love Boat. About 600 shows and 25000 individual episodes are available in all in AMP. No numbers have yet been given on the number of AMP downloads but Adobes approach to this seems counter-intuitive to how ubiquitous Flash has become as the default video player across the distributed Web...trying to then deduce that because of this ubiquity users will download a new mediaplayer and develop new loyalties to a closed desktop app is as I mentioned before counter-intuitive.Check out the best business jobs in digital media. Adobe says the app now has more than 250000 pieces of content with more than 600 shows content partners include Food Network Viacom and CBSCBS and Showtime Networks a CBS Company are also adding new content to the catalog in Adobe Media Player. CBS is delivering full episodes of 48 Hours Beverly Hills 90210 Seasons 1 2 and 3 Danny Bonaduce Life Coach Family Ties Seasons 1 and 2 The Love Boat and The Price is Right as well as clips from the Late Show with David Letterman. Showtime Networks is offering clips of some of its most popular shows including The Tudors. Were not quite sure what to think of Adobe Media Player. Its not as impressive or as well-watched we assume as Hulu but its kind of a freebie for Adobe. The app itself couldnt have taken much to build Adobe gets to evangelize its Flash video and AIR technologies doesnt have to pay a dime in video streaming costs and gets to share in some ad revenue too.
Adobe Target FreshAIRapps Officially Moves to a New Home

Only two weeks have passed since we first reported on Adobe Incs undertaking to remove the FreshAIRapps domain and nameplate from the Web. In short FreshAIRapps was a compendium or directory of applications built upon the Adobe AIR platform. Users could rate codeworks and read relevant news and so forth in one central location. It would be accurate to have called it a fairly popular upstart.Yes called is the key word to keep in mind now. According to the founder of FreshAIRapps James Whittaker who alerted Mashable to the fact earlier today the website is no more. An attempt to visit the URL shows a mostly bare white page stating that the site has moved to a new location. Seconds later the visitor is automatically transferred there. &#8220There&#8221 being RefreshingApps.com.It sports a slightly different design but its basic makeup is all very much intact. The one overt exception is a now-absent section originally seen at FreshAIRapps labeled Tutorials. There was a notable level of resentment and fury levied at Adobe for pushing forcefully for the removal of FreshAIRapps in name only. Some commenters found it peculiar that the company would enforce a trademark of AIR. I myself seconded such objections. Still the sites creator continued to converse with Adobe over the planned transfer to the RefreshingApps domain and has now officially announced the completion of the move.Whittaker does note he and the RefreshingApps project will be working closely with Adobe and their evangelists to further promote the Adobe AIR offering as well as RefreshingApps.com. He also mentioned that word concerning AIR stuff and RefreshingApps will likely be delivered by Adobe sometime this week.---Related Articles at Mashable! - The Social Networking BlogAdobe Lays Claim To AIR In The Web Domain SpaceAdobe Can&#8217t Fix Security Flaw Until End of OctoberAdobe Building Office Apps to Go After Microsoft?Adobe Launches Updated Flash Player 9 MoviestarAdobe to Acquire Makers of Web-Based Word Processor BuzzwordBeware of PDF Files!
Some Startups Just Dont Need Starting

Ive been scrolling slowly down the list of items mentioned by Paul Graham a partner at the startup micro-financier outfit Y Combinator in a piece titled Startup Ideas Wed Like to Fund. Its an interesting write-up and I think a whole lot of people should give it a look. Not necessarily because genius resides within. In fact a lot of what Graham says will strike most any reader as fairly obviously wanting for the wand of progress. There are some points raised however that either seem too vague or uninformative or just plain unnecessary to be worth a new attempt. Of course I do recognize that Grahams post is only a soft invitation for startups to submit ideas to Y Combinator. And well it would be pretty senseless to object to the inclinations of the firm. Thats not what I intend for here. Rather I simply wish to parse some items that I consider superfluous and unnecessary. The kind of stuff that invokes the been there done that adage in other words. Ideas that already have solid representation on the Web and don&#8217t require major fixes or alterations.First there is the idea posited by YC Ill abbreviate it investors name from here on out for a fresh startup to compete with Microsoft. Now a plan to take on Redmond is all good and well. An admirable goal for sure. But others are already working toward that objective. Google is one. Zoho is another. Adobe recently introduced its own suite as well. And while they may ideally prefer to engineer a collective effort to bring down the software markets reigning cash cow they will no doubt look after their own health above all other concerns. Save for an acquisition new rising stars arent likely to grow so tall in other words. But with the tech sector feeling a few pangs of financial caution the idea of buying only what you need would logically come to the fore. So at this point Ill short any newbies to this particular segment of the Web application market.Photovideo sharing services are another group on YCs agenda. Why that is is somewhat of a mystery to me. Flickr Photobucket Facebook are all solid examples. YC explains that there may ultimately be 30 different subtypes of imagevideo sharing services have of which remain to be discovered. Im not so sure about that. People like having reams of data at their fingertips. Thats part of the reason why industrys giant have succeeded. Everyone likes a winner right? As for serving the long tail of the Web where photo and video users may prefer to take their media host services platform and adapt it to fit conditions on personal websites that can already be accomplished. SmugMug is a nice example of this actually. On entirely separate note while Y Combinator imagines there are better dating sites to come I would say the life of those networks is finite. I sure hope so anyway. To approach the concept in a different way dating sites will simply be replaced by your run-of-the-mill social networking services. Mobile ones especially. To keep perpetuating this idea of specialized matchmaking through ample profile metadata and the like is simply absurd. It may work some of the time but it doesnt work enough of the time.I really wish Wikipedia alternatives much luck because theyll need it. Wikipedia may evolve it may invoke new layers of security it may open itself up to cool new or old sources of information. But the chance of Wikipedia actually being irretrievably challenged or supplanted in the foreseeable future is insert dirty words here. Wikipedia is going to be the new encyclopedia. It may not be something taken seriously by insert name of educational or professional institution here now but it shall. The fact of the matter is that Wikipedia has been built on a collective brain power similar in structure to that which built the Oxford English Dictionary. And how is the OED considered by academics might I ask?Lastly Id like to highlight an idea put forth by YC placed somewhere near the middle of its list of 30. This one is 16. It reads as such&#8220A form of search that depends on design. Google doesn&#8217t have a lot of weaknesses. One of the biggest is that they have no sense of design. They do the next best thing which is to keep things sparse. But if there were a kind of search that depended a lot on design a startup might actually be able to beat Google at search&#8230.There are a number of things wrong with that statement. For one Google may not seem to have any sense of design for some but it does. Its actually described in Paul Grahams subsequent line. Indeed sparseness is Googles schtick. That and a super-simple color palette. Those appear to be the fundamentals for the companys overarching design. And years and years of experience and trend setting and all other things that go into making an Internet company into a Internet giant and an Internet leader have shown that Google has largely been walking the right path

PodTech Sells Out Why is Everyone So Glum?

PodTech one of the earliest companies to form around the concept of podcasting has finally seen an exit following what can best be described as an extremely tumultuous history. As someone who&#8217s followed the saga of PodTech from the very beginning the image to the public as well as what&#8217s been going on behind the scenes has been at best confusing.Today Eric Eldon over at VentureBeat is reporting that PodTech has been sold for a startlingly small sum less than half a million. The buyer is a relative unknown called ViewPartner supposedly a communications technology company. According to multiple sources the company was expected to make $7 million in revenue on the production side alone. The confusion about PodTech goes way back for folks like me who&#8217ve been a part of the podcast community since it&#8217s inception. Most of the other organizations and networks that have formed around podcasting have all been grassroots in nature and PodTech bucked that trend by being squarely corporate and thus a slight bit disconnected from the rest of the podcasting scene.Still that didn&#8217t prevent them from having a bold plan for success employing social media and podcasting. That&#8217s why it was particularly confusing when the wheels started coming off the bus last year starting with funding issues then Irina Slutsky being let go along with other employees and the Vloggies then John Furrier essentially quitting and his eventual abrupt leaving. Then last October Fake Steve Jobs broke the news that Robert Scoble was leaving the company which was hastily denied defended and then fulfilled.It&#8217s a sad end for a company that held so much potential but has lacked direction for quite some time now. Just about everyone felt that the end was imminent and while this isn&#8217t exactly a eulogy for a dead company there are a lot of folks who ended up with the short end of the stick on this deal.I&#8217m certain the analysis will be spun by many folks in the coming days that this is yet another nail in the coffin for the idea of podcasting and business being bedfellows. Keep in mind that a company that was only a few years old went through a number of regime changes and strategy shifts and where it ended up can&#8217t be taken as a measure of what&#8217s possible in the business.---Related Articles at Mashable! - The Social Networking BlogPodtech Is Alive And Well Claims ScoblePodTech Loses Founder John Furrier AlmostPodTech&#8217s Demise Imminent?Microsoft Beware Adobe Flex Goes Open SourcePodTech.net Gets ScobleizedOut with Furrier&#8217s Vloggies In with Slutsky&#8217s WinniesFastCompany Launches Online Video Network Under Scoble

The Missing iPhone Apps Steve Jobs Doesnt Want You To See AAPL

Apples AAPL iPhone 3G finally goes on sale today. But its other long-awaited mobile product -- the iPhoneiPod touch App Store -- has already been up for a day. And weve already noticed that among the 500-some apps that Apple has made available there are some notable omissions. What sort of stuff are we missing? Programs that shouldnt be that difficult to build but that Apple doesnt want on its machines -- unless its the one controlling it. Some of these apps could includeAmazon MP3 Store One thing we dont think well ever see on the iPhone A music buyingdownloading shop that competes with Apples iTunes store.Skype Or a similar Internet phone app that could be used over AT&Ts T 3G network. Apple wouldnt screw its partners that make money selling airtime.Unlocker Which would allow you to unlock your phone from its official carrier to use with a different GSM SIM card. Like T-Mobile in the U.S. for example.Hulu or a similar free ad-supported TVmovie streaming app Why is there a dreadful shortage of entertainment apps so far? Apple of course wants you to download your TV episodes and movies from iTunes. Rajeev Raman CEO of Mywaves a free ad-suported mobile video service already complained to the New York Times that Apple wasnt letting his app in the store. Steve Jobs acknowledged it too. Hes right. We will compete. He added Thats a discussion to have.Nintendo emulator Or anything that would let you play pirated games. This is already available for hacked or jailbroken iPhones. But its not in the app store and probably wont be.Adobe Flash plug-in Adobes ADBE struggle to get Flash on the iPhone is no secret. To be most effective the Flash animationvideo software would need to display Flash content in-line with Web pages. So it would need to be a plug-in for the iPhones MobileSafari browser. But Apple doesnt let companies make plug-ins for the browser and might never. And even if Flash animationsvideos were to open in a separate Flash player app itd still need to take a cue from Safari. Which means Adobe and Apple have some negotiating to do.Firefox or a different Web browser We assume Apple makes some money from Googles GOOG default search position on MobileSafari. So anything that would take that small but uncontested revenue stream away from Apple could be banned.Wi-fi hotspot creator An app that would hijack your 3G signal and turn it into wi-fi for your MacBook iPod touch or other machine to use. If tethering as this is called is ever allowed itll probably be an add-on service that AT&T charges $30-50 a month extra for.Jukebox software Which either replaces or complements the iTunes software on the iPhone. This means that Justin Smithline -- who just raised $750000 to make iPhone apps -- wont be able to officially distribute Instinctiv Shuffle a smart shuffle app which he says some 70000 people have already downloaded to use on hacked iPhones. These are just a few ideas.
Roku Has Bigger Streaming Video Plans Beyond Netflix NFLX

If you bought Rokus $99 Netflix movie-streaming box youll be getting more content soon -- but not necessarily from Netflix. Roku tells Forbes that a software update later this year will let you stream video content from other big name providers.Roku didnt say who these providers are but we have some guesses. Its possible the set-top box could plug into Googles GOOG YouTube interface the same way other gadgets like Apples AAPL Apple TV and iPhone do. Or Roku might be adding a Web browser with an Adobe ADBE Flash plugin to its systems which could theoretically play video off YouTube Hulu or potentially any other company that uses Flash for its video like ABC or NBC.It could also be getting content from the forthcoming on-demand streaming video service from Amazon AMZN but we think thats less likely. Amazons service will more directly compete with Netflix -- and this is for now at least still the Netflix box. Were contacting Roku and well update with any more information. Any better guesses?
Why Googles Indexing More Adobe Flash Apps Wont Help Much

Today Adobe announced that they have been working with Yahoo and Google to make Flash more searchable and have provided the search giants with technology to help them do so. Google also provided more details here. But based on what has been said so far I fear the announcement may be a bit of an over promise.Unfortunately there is no technical discussion or whitepaper to go along with this announcement and with such a broad and important technical claim more is needed than a one-page press release or even Googles GOOG Q & A.Nevertheless the problem Adobe ADBE is trying to address is an important one and so the issue is worth some discussion. The problem Adobe is attempting to solve is really broader than Flash cant be indexed as many people today think of it.As many developers are moving more of their application logic from the server to the web browser indexing becomes harder. Browsers used to just grab web pages and display them. Now our browsers are becoming full-fledged application environments. They are almost mini-operating systems. And in that sense many web sites are really more like in-browser applications than they are what we used to think of as web pages.Flash is a leader as a technology for deploying such in-browser applications also know as Rich Internet Applications RIAs but many such applications are also written in Javascript. And so it is important to keep in mind that the problem of indexing RIAs is a problem for RIAs written in Javascript as well as Flash though this fact is rarely discussed. The core of the issue is really that web pages can be indexed and applications cant. Or at least it doesnt make sense in the most basic sense to index applications. And this issue is really more conceptual than technical. For example if you indexed a copy of Microsoft Word on your computer what would that mean? Would it just mean that you could find all of the text from the menu bar and the dialog boxes in Word? And would that be useful? Probably not.Todays Flash applications particularly those written in Adobes Flex application framework are really most often views into data that is loaded from a database or server somewhere when the user runs the application. So the interesting data isnt actually ever in the actual Flash application swf pronounced swiff file. In other words indexing the swf does no good. What happens in a typical Flash application is that the user enters some search text or clicks on some button that says for example show me red shoes. The app then calls the database across the web grabs the list of red shoes and displays them. So in order for the search engine to be able to find the fact that my application shows red shoes it needs to provide some input into the application to make it display that information. It needs to pretend to be a user and trick the app into going into the red shoe state. Most importantly if the application changes state that state needs to be captured as a change in the URL so that it can be referenced later.Note that this is exactly what search engine indexers do with standard web pages. The difference is that it is much easier to do it with web pages. Web links are easy to follow and so it is easy to change the state of an HTML web site and it is much easier to see what all of the available states are. All you do is scan the page and look for all the links. In any real application whether written in Flash Javascript or even C++ states are much harder to discover and generate particularly when they may involve an expectation of clicking on some button or typing something. What is interesting is that in the Adobe announcement they seem to be implying that they have solved this issue. But my problem is I dont really see how. I am confident they can do some useful things leveraging Flex applications ability to support deep linking. Without getting too technical there are things that Flex application developers can do to make their states more accessible via the URL bar which would certainly be helpful here. But I do not see how without much more explicit developer tools and actual work on the part of developers that most existing RIAs Flash or otherwise can be broadly searchable. So in short my concern is that Adobe is announcing that they can now index Flash applications by being able to manipulate state -- and I strongly doubt that what they are announcing works as broadly or as compellingly as the press releases implies. My suspicion is that it only really useful for a small subset of the real Flash applications out in the wild since even if the search engine finds the text it will in most cases not be able to get the application into the appropriate state to show that text. And so until Adobe Google or others issue developer best practices guidelines for working with search engines I suspect this announced technologyinitiative will be more limited in its benefits than some might expect.Earl

Flash Search being Enabled by Google Yahoo ImagesVideo Still Not Searchable

In a major step forward in search technology Adobe NSDQ ADBE is working with Google NSDQ GOOG and Yahoo NSDQ YHOO to make Flash files searchable in online search. The project will enable searches on Flash content to return text and links which can then be indexed and hence available in search results for the users. Content from a Flash application or even a game or advertisement will be available to search engines reports InfoWorld. Pages containing a Flash .SWF file will be returned in a search. Google has already implemented this while Yahoo ever the laggard will enable Flash search in a future version whenever that comes out.As for images and video no luck yet. From Googles own description If your Flash files only include images we will not recognize or index any text that may appear in those images. Similarly we do not generate any anchor text for Flash buttons which target some URL but which have no associated text. Also note that we do not index FLV files such as the videos that play on YouTube because these files contain no text elements. No plans were disclosed for other search engines like MSFTs Live.com or Ask.com but expect them to be enabled at a later date...MSFT might take a while though since it has its own Flash competitor Silverlight and has its own motives on not surfacing Flash fils in results.Among the beneficiaries will be the fancy e-commercetransactional info sites who use Flash to develop their shopping site and product pages whose results will now crop up in the search results...and this may even lead to some new SEO tricks who knows...Some more details in release here.

Adobe Teams Up With Google Yahoo To Index More Flash Content For Search

Adobe ADBE will make it easier for search engines to index more content in applications built with its Flash software. Previously Google and Yahoo could index text and links in Flash animations and applications. Now with some optimized Adobe Flash Player technology theyll be able to uncover information in Flash files that is currently undiscoverable by search engines. This is good news for searchers who might be able to find more stuff that theyre looking for and its potentially good news for publishers who use a lot of Flash More of their content could be indexed on Google GOOG or Yahoo YHOO than before which could increase traffic. Its also a smart move for Adobe which is going to see more competition from other Internet application platformsframeworks -- and must give companies every possible reason to keep using Flash. Why isnt Microsoft MSFT getting a helping hand? We dont know the official answer but we bet it has to do with Silverlight the would-be Flash killer thats brewing in Redmond.See AlsoAdobe Flash Coming To Apples iPhone -- Maybe SomedayAdobe Q2 Beats Street Q3 Revenue Guidance A Bit Weak Adobe CEO Narayens Six-Month Review Thumbs Up

Whats Next For Apples iPod Touch More Memory Camera Different Sizes? AAPL

Apples AAPL iPhone 3G announced earlier this month and shipping July 11 has taken away a lot of attention from its cousin the iPod touch. And rightfully so The new iPhone is now cheaper than the iPod touch excluding monthly service fees and has a fast always-on Internet connection which the iPod doesnt. But we think theres still a huge market for the iPod touch such as people who dont want to pay a minimum $70 per month for phone and data service people who use non-AT&T T wireless carriers and people who like keeping their mobile phone and MP3 player separate. So we dont expect Apple to leave the iPod touch alone. But if its going to become the first mainstream wi-fi mobile platform as the company has been calling it it needs some improvements. Specifically wed like to see- More storage for the same price. The 16-gig unit should drop to $299 the 32-gig unit to $399. An 8-gig iPhone will cost $199 after carrier subsidy a 16-gig iPhone will cost $299.- A camera. The iPhones camera is a novelty but its a useful one and wed like to see it on the touch too. Video recording also makes sense especially with a 32-gig drive.- Mic and speakers. People are going to use this as a wi-fi Internet phone. So itd be helpful if Apple included a microphone. Speakers would be nice so a small group could listen to tunes or calls.- A bigger version. Increasing the screen size to five or seven inches would make movie-watching and Web-browsing much better. Load it up with enough features and capabilities and youre looking at a mini-tablet computer and we think theres a substantial market for that.We think some of these changes could come as early as this fall. We dont expect Apple to do much to the iPod touch during the back-to-school shopping season -- during which theyre giving away iPod touches to Mac buyers. But sometime around mid-October when people start sniffing for holiday presents we expect Apple to refresh the iPod touch.Anything particular youd like to see in the next edition of the iPod touch? The ad-supported streaming video service which also allows users to watch some of its shows as downloads without being connected to the Web sounds interesting but were not sure anyone knows about it.We havent heard any metrics on downloads of the player or users and today Adobe releases a mostly news-free announcement that appears to remind potential content partners that it exists.Adobe says its adding clips from Comedy Centrals VIA The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Yes clips. This after Comedy Central gave full episodes of the shows to Hulu both were already available on Joost and Comedy Centrals own Web sites. Adobe says CBS CBS is adding some shows no one has heard of Greatest American Dog to the shows the service launched with two months ago. Neither Viacom or CBS is allowing its shows to be downloaded negating Adobes biggest potential differentiating feature from Hulu etc.The TV world is moving to ubiquitous distribution online. Its not there yet see Viacom v. Google Fox and NBCs exclusive with Hulu but its getting there. See for instance Warner Bros. mega deal with Joost Veoh etc -- which also did not include Adobe.
